Cold-Shooting Brandywine Downed By Immaculata

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine was limited to 27 percent shooting from the field during a 57-36 non-conference women's basketball loss to Immaculata on its home floor Saturday afternoon.

Brandywine got off to a cold start, connecting on just one field goal during the first 10 minutes and trailed 15-4 after one quarter.

Immaculata increased the margin to 13 points before Brandi James (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) sank back-to-back layups, bringing the Lions within nine with under two minutes to play before halftime. However, Theresa Kearney knocked down two free throws and Brielle Rigo set down a layup during the Mighty Macs' final two possessions, making the score 25-12 at the break.

James netted half of Brandywine's 14 third-quarter points, sinking a layup with 4:41 to go to keep the Lions within 13, but Immaculata countered with the next seven points to up the margin to 40-22.

The Lions closed the third quarter with a 7-1 spurt; however, Immaculata held Brandywine without a made field goal for the first 4:55 of the final period and pulled away for good.

James collected team highs with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Nikki Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City) added eight points and seven boards and Madison D'Ambrosio (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) chipped in six points, five boards and three assists.

Immaculata, which shot 38 percent from the field and was limited to 4-of-20 shooting from beyond the arc, received 16 points from Theresa Kearney and 13 points and 10 boards from Brielle Rigo.

Brandywine (1-4) hosts Penn State Hazleton in its Penn State University Athletic Conference opener on Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
