Brandywine Rolls Through Scranton For Fifth-Straight Win

DUNMORE, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team cruised to its fifth consecutive victory Friday night by limiting Penn State Scranton to 17 percent shooting during a 78-35 victory.

The triumph upped Brandywine's overall record to 6-4, while adding a fourth conference win in as many tries for the Lions. Brandywine, the two-time defending PSUAC champion, has won all four league games by more than 20 points.

Three starters netted double figures for Brandywine, which shot 42 percent from the field and turned the ball over a season-low seven times. Brandi James (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) and Nikki Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City) tied for the team lead with 15 points each, while Madison D'Ambrosio (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) added 14 points.

Making her first start of the season, Chantel Hatton (Philadelphia, Pa./Chester) tallied nine points and Ally Giannakarios (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley) and Madison Michael (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley) both recorded seven points. D'Ambrosio, Giannakarios and James all pulled down five rebounds to lead the Lions.

Hatton and James combined for the first nine points of the game as Brandywine held the hosts without a point during the opening 4:11. The Lions led 24-8 after 10 minutes and extended the margin to 40-14 at halftime, yielding just six Scranton points during the second quarter.

A Velez layup swelled the advantage to 30 points for the first time midway through the third quarter and the Lions would cruise the rest of the way. Velez handed out five assists and collected four of Brandywine's nine steals on the night.

Following a week off for final, Brandywine visits Penn State Schuylkill on Dec. 15 at 1:00 pm in its final game before the holidays.
