Brandywine Suffers 56-45 Setback At Hazleton

HAZLETON, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team was knocked off by Penn State Hazleton by a score of 56-45 on Wednesday night.

Amelia Brooks (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) notched her third-straight double-figure rebound game and first double-double of the season by tallying 10 points and 11 rebounds. Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) produced 11 points, while Hope Coacher (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) added nine points. Floyd also tallied five rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Sierra Diawara (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) chipped in eight points and five boards.

Hazleton led by one point following a low-scoring first quarter at 7-6, but extended its lead to 12 points by halftime. Brandywine closed within three when Coacher sank a pair of free throws with 2:06 to go before the break; however Hazleton scored the final nine points of the half to grab a 29-17 edge.

The hosts maintained their 12-point edge at the conclusion of the third period and continued to lead by double figures late into the fourth quarter.

Trailing 50-37 with 2:33 to go in the game, two free throws from Erin Michael (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) started a late Brandywine flurry. Nine seconds after her free throws, Michael grabbed a steal and sank a layup. Floyd then produced a Hazleton turnover and drained a layup to bring the Lions with seven at the 1:16 mark.

Another Hazleton turnover allowed Brandywine an opportunity to further cut into the deficit but two shots were off the mark and the Lions were forced to foul. After Hazleton knocked down one-of-two free throws, Diawara's jumper brought Brandywine within six with 38 seconds left; however Hazleton converted three of its four free throw attempts and produced a steal and fast-break layup during the final 30 seconds to seal the victory.

Brandywine forced 20 Hazleton turnovers, but was limited to 27 percent shooting. Hazleton held a 46-39 edge on the boards.

Brandywine (7-11, 4-5 PSUAC) hosts Penn State Schuylkill on Saturday at noon.
