Lions Start Quick; Hold Off Keystone

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine scored three times during the first 17 minutes and held off Keystone to capture a 3-2 nonconference women's soccer victory on Tuesday afternoon.

It took Brandywine just over eight minutes to find the back of the net for the first time as Christina Kane (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) tapped in Samantha Bearden's (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) crossing pass into the box.

Brianna Banks (Philadelphia, Pa./Parkway Center) doubled the lead 3:04 later, taking a lead pass from Rachel Weir (Neptune City, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and depositing the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Bearden capped the Lions' scoring after heading in a pass that Kane had sent into the box.

The Giants netted their first goal of the match at the 18:01 mark of the first half and then got one goal closer early in the final stanza when Nisa Cortes scored her second goal of the contest, but Brandywine would not allow Keystone to complete the comeback.

Following the Giants' second goal, Brandywine held Keystone without a shot until the final four minutes and goalkeeper Emily Bush (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) was up to the task, making a pair of stops in crunch time.

Bush blocked seven shots overall for the Lions, who recorded six shots on goal, to earn her first victory of the season. Banks, Bearden and Kane all tallied two shots on goal for Brandywine.

The Lions (1-0-1) hit the road on Saturday with a 2:00 pm match at Cairn.
