Eight Fall Student-Athletes Claim USCAA National Academic Team Honors

MEDIA, Pa. -- A total of eight Penn State Brandywine fall student-athletes representing three teams earned National Academic Team recognition from the United States Collegiate Athletic Association recently.

Six women's soccer student-athletes earned the award: Samantha Bearden (Ewing, N.J./Ewing), Michaela Lowery (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York), Kierra MacLeod (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Angelina Maroulis (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley), Amanda Roy (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) and Rachel Weir (Neptune City, N.J./Red Bank Regional), while women's cross country sophomore Brooke Theveny (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) and men's soccer senior Josh Burton (West Chester, Pa./PA Cyber Charter) also garnered the honor.

The USCAA National Academic Team award honors student-athletes during each season who have compiled a grade-point average of at least 3.50 and reached sophomore athletic and academic standing.

Burton, who plans to graduate in December with a degree in information sciences and technology, earned his second USCAA National Academic Team award in as many years. He recorded four goals and one assist this fall, finishing his 50-game career with eight goals and three assists for 19 points.

Theveny earned second team all-conference laurels as a freshman communication sciences and disorders major.  Her top 5K time this fall came at the Cheyney Invitational in September when she posted a personal-best time of 26:01.

Bearden also earned Second Team All-American accolades at the USCAA banquet last week after being selected First Team All-PSUAC. A human development and family studies major, Bearden recorded five goals and five assists in 14 matches.

Lowery garnered first team all-conference accolades as a defender. The business major started 12 games for the Lions and helped the team produce five shutouts.

MacLeod, an anthropology major, was also a starting defender, playing in all 14 of Brandywine's matches this fall. She was one-of-seven Lions to claim first team all-conference honors.

Maroulis made 14 appearances, including five starts on defense this fall. During the last two seasons at Brandywine, Maroulis, a physical therapy major, has netted one goal and one assist in 29 matches.

Roy tallied three goals in 13 games during her junior season. A communications major, Roy has played in 21 matches since transfering to Brandywine prior to the 2016 season.

Weir, a two-time First Team All-PSUAC midfielder, registered five assists and two goals in 14 starts this fall. The human development and family studies major now owns 14 goals and 13 assists through two seasons at Brandywine.
