Gwynedd Mercy Holds Off Brandywine 4-2

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Gwynedd Mercy scored twice in both halves and held off the Penn State Brandywine women's soccer team for a 4-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Goals from Jordyn Basile and Bethany Beilich in a 3:46 span midway through the first half put the Griffins on top 2-0, but the Lions answered with a score at the 32:47 mark.

Leyla Vasquez (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) ripped a long shot from outside the box that deflected off a pair of Gwynedd defenders and into the net as Brandywine cut the deficit to one entering halftime.

Basile struck again during the 51st minute, scoring on a breakaway to up the Griffins' margin back to two goals, and another Gwynedd Mercy marker with under 16 minutes to play gave GMU a three-goal edge.

Brandywine continued to battle, pulling within two when Hope Priemon (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) collected a rebound following Vasquez's shot and found the back of the net during the 81st minute; however, that would be the final shot on goal allowed by the Griffins.

Vasquez accounted for two of Brandywine's six shots on goal, while Zoey Lineman (West Deptford, N.J./GCIT) registered a team-high three shots. Demareste Dorvilma (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) blocked 11 shots, while playing all 90 minutes in net and saw her record drop to 1-1.

Brandywine (1-2) will play at home for the first time this season on Friday against Carlow at 5:00 PM.
