Brandywine Tennis Teams Edged In Fall Openers

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine tennis teams dropped their season-opening matches on Tuesday afternoon to DeSales University as the men's squad was edged 5-4, while the women's team dropped a 9-0 decision to the Bulldogs.

The Brandywine men led 2-1 through the doubles portion of the match, but came up short after DeSales claimed four of the six singles matches.

Phuc Nguyen Ho (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) and George Canavati (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) teamed to claim a No. 1 doubles victory by a score of 9-7, while Wenceslao Lara (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Twp.) and Victor Ficarra (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown STEM Academy) picked up the second doubles triumph for the Lions, winning their No. 2 flight, 8-6.

Lara was also a winner during his singles match, topping Jorey Ferraro 6-2, 6-4; as was Canavati, who also posted a triumph in straight sets (6-1, 6-0).

On the women's side, DeSales opened up a 3-0 lead after doubles and closed out the match by claiming each singles bout in straight sets.

Katie Corey (Lansdowne, Pa./Agora Cyber Charter) won five games during her No. 2 singles match, but fell 6-3, 6-2 to Sarah Chan. Stephanie Bryan (Drexel Hill, Pa./Ridley) won two games of her top-flight match, while Jaemi Hammond (Media, Pa./Zama American) claimed one game at No. 4 singles.

The Brandywine women are back in action Saturday at Cedar Crest (1:00 pm), while the men's team will not return to the courts until the spring semester.
