Lions Take Two Against St. Elizabeth

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine men's and women's tennis teams were both victorious on Friday afternoon as the men's team posted an 8-1 victory over the College of St. Elizabeth and the women's squad won by a 6-3 count over the visiting Eagles.

For the men, Matt Canavati (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) and Phuc Nguyen Ho (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) both eased to singles triumphs by 6-1, 6-0 scores, while Wenceslao Lara (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) rolled to a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles, winning both frames by 6-1 counts.

Stevie DiSipio (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) added a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles and Arjun Puri (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Twp.) also won in two sets, 7-5, 6-3.

DiSipio and James Cellucci (Rosemont, Pa./Radnor) rolled at third doubles, claiming an 8-0 win. Canavati and Ho teamed to take No. 1 doubles 8-2, while Lara and Victor Ficarra (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown STEM Academy) posted an 8-2 triumph in their second-flight doubles match.

Playing their final match of the spring, the Brandywine women came out on top for the first time after winning two-of-three doubles contests and four of the six singles bouts.

The duo of Katie Corey (Lansdowne, Pa./Agora Cyber Charter) and Jaemi Hammond (Media, Pa./Zama American) cruised to an 8-0 triumph at No. 2 doubles. Hammond was also victorious during her singles match, winning at No. 4 in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.

Vidya Nayak (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) posted a 6-0 first set triumph before her match was forced to end in the second set when her opponent retired due to injury.

Brandywine won its additional three matches, one doubles and two singles, by default.

The Brandywine men's team closes out spring play on Wednesday against SUNY Delhi at 3:30 PM.
