Jim Gastner was hired as the men's soccer coach at Penn State Delco in 2005 before making his mark on the department as the campus' athletic director from 2006-16.

Under Gastner's leadership, Brandywine added nine sports to its varsity athletic offerings, while more than doubling its number of student-athletes to 160 as the department expanded to become the largest in the PSUAC. He also oversaw the addition of two full-time staff members, an assistant athletic director for recruiting and a sports information director. Additionally, Gastner aided the campus in its transition to the USCAA beginning in 2008.

During Gastner's 11-year tenure as athletic director, Brandywine became one of the top athletic departments in the conference. Five teams combined to win eight PSUAC championships, while Brandywine finished in the top two of the PSUAC Chancellors' Cup standings during each of Gastner's final five years. Brandywine captured its first Chancellors' Cup as the best athletic program in the league following the 2014-15 academic year.

In addition to his duties as athletic director, Gastner served as chair of the PSUAC Ethics and Compliance Committee.
