Samohod Fires Shutout; Brandywine Handles Fayette 10-0

VERO BEACH, Fla. – Joe Samohod (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) fired a complete-game shutout, leading the Penn State Brandywine baseball team to a lopsided, 10-0 victory over Penn State Fayette on Monday afternoon in Vero Beach.

Samohod, who tossed his seventh-career complete game, threw the second shutout of his career (Apr. 26, 2013 vs. Penn State Beaver). His career-high nine strikeouts are the most by a Brandywine pitcher since Tom Osenbach fanned nine Williamson Trade School Mechanics on March 28, 2013. Samohod scattered six Fayette hits, all singles, and stranded five Fayette runners on base.

The Brandywine offense also got on track, recording 12 hits, five of which went for extra bases. Eight different Lions tallied at least one hit, including Joey Buoni (Chester Heights, Pa./Salesianum), Matt Masi (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) and Kevin Roche (Malvern, Pa./Chaminade College Prep (Calif.)), who all tallied two hits.

Brandywine, which scored in every inning except the first, took a 1-0 lead on Roche's RBI double in the second. Max Palumbo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) doubled the Lions' lead when he sent a two-out single through the middle for the Lions' second run.

Masi added an RBI triple in the third and a run-scoring base hit in the fifth, while Brett Sheeran (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) plated Roche with a base hit in the fourth. Brandywine put five runs on the board in the sixth as Reynolds, Will Scott-Norris (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant) and Tommy Crumlish (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) all recorded run-scoring hits.

Brandywine faces Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) Monday night at 7:00 pm.
