Brandywine Takes Weekend Series From Wilkes Barre

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine baseball team swept a doubleheader at Penn State Wilkes Barre on Sunday afternoon by scores of 12-1 and 6-2 to claim a pair of victories during the teams' three-game weekend series.

Kevin Roche (Malvern, Pa./Chaminade College Prep (Calif.)) went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored in game one, while Will Scott-Norris (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant) added two hits and drove in a pair. Matt Masi (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) also collected two hits and scored three times.

Masi's solo home run gave Brandywine a 1-0, first-inning lead. The Lions took over the game by plating four runs in the third inning and three more one frame later.

Tyler Michaels (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) earned his second win of the season by striking out five and allowing just one run on six hits in 5.0 innings. Matt Staiber (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) pitched the sixth inning and struck out two.

Brandywine took a 2-0 lead through one inning of game two and added three more in the third as Scott-Norris plated Robert Spitaletta (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) with a sacrifice fly, John Gorgone (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) scored on an error and Kevin Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) added an RBI single.

Wilkes Barre pulled two runs closer in the fourth, but Joey Buoni's (Chester Heights, Pa./Salesianum) run-scoring double added an insurance run one frame later, accounting for the remainder of the scoring.

Gorgone collected two hits as did Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) and Brett Sheeran (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), while Spitaletta and Roche each scored twice.

Kevin Sessa (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) improved to 2-1 on the season by going the first 6.0 innings on the mound. He struck out four and surrendered two runs on three hits, while Nate Forwood (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant) closed out the game with a scoreless seventh inning.

Brandywine hosts Penn State Schuylkill Tuesday night at Maple Zone beginning at 5:30 pm.
