Brandywine Takes Home Finale From Clarks Summit
MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine baseball team closed out the home portion of its schedule with a 7-3 non-conference victory over Clarks Summit University on Wednesday afternoon.
Matt Masi (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) fell a home run shy of the cycle as he went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI, while Joey Buoni (Chester Heights, Pa./Salesianum) added two hits and Brett Sheeran (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) drove in three runs.
Charlie Cooper (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) extended his scoreless inning streak to 12 by holding the Defenders without a run over the first 4.0 frames. He struck out four and allowed just two hits to earn his second victory.
Bradley Ulmer (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech), Kevin Sessa (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Matt Staiber (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) all fired one scoreless inning in relief of Cooper.
After the first two batters of the first inning were retired, Masi started a two-out rally with a base hit. Two batters later, Kevin Roche (Malvern, Pa./Chaminade College Prep (Calif.)) brought Masi in with a base hit and Sheeran later added a double down the right field line that scored a pair.
Masi added a run-scoring triple in the second, while the Lions took advantage of three Defender errors in the fifth to plate their final three runs.
Brandywine (15-16, 11-2 PSUAC) travels to Penn State Abington on Thursday for its final non-league game of the year beginning at 3:30 pm.
