Brandywine Falls At Marywood

SCRANTON, Pa. – Marywood hit four home runs and its pitchers struck out 13 Penn State Brandywine batters to hand the Lions a 12-4 defeat during Brandywine's first road baseball game of the year Sunday afternoon.

A leadoff home run would be signs of things to come for the Pacers, who plated their 12 runs during the first six innings.

Brandywine pushed across single runs during the third, sixth, seventh and eighth frames, while producing eight hits overall. Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) and Ben Mutz (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) both collected two knocks, while Nick Kutufaris (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) singled and stole two bases.

Mutz's RBI single scored Tom Donahue (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) with the Lions' first run of the afternoon in the fourth inning. Two frames later, Donahue worked a bases-loaded walk to force in another run. Wright scored on Cam Baughman's (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) groundout in the seventh and added a run-scoring single in the eighth to cap Brandywine's scoring output.

Ricky Palmer (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) was the first of six Brandywine pitchers to see action on the day. He yielded one run in one inning of work and struck out one. Chris Edwards (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) and Derek Cappadoccia (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains) both tossed scoreless innings in relief. Cappadoccia fanned the side during the seventh frame.

Brandywine (1-4) heads to Florida for Spring Break beginning Saturday with a doubleheader against St. Cloud Tech.
