Brandywine Bests New Jersey City 8-5

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Penn State Brandywine baseball team earned its first victory during its Spring Break trip at the RussMatt Invitational as the Lions topped New Jersey City University 8-5 on Monday afternoon. The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled by rain.

Brandywine scored during the first inning for the fourth time in seven games this spring to take a 1-0 lead. Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) walked to lead off the frame and after moving to third on a pair of groundouts, crossed home when Mike DeGirolamo (Fredrick, Md./Fredrick) legged out an infield single.

New Jersey City scored twice in the third inning and extended its lead to 3-1 one frame later, but Brandywine pushed three runs across during the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead. Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) evened the count by lifting his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot, over the left field fence. Three batters later, Max Tavarez (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) delivered a two-out single, scoring Jack Hedger (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) with the go-ahead run.

A Brandywine error allowed two Gothic Knights to score in the fifth as NJCU jumped back on top; however, Brandywine answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Wright started the fifth with a double and came around to score on a wild pitch, while Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) and Tyler Brooks (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) both crossed home via NJCU error to put the Lions on top for good.

Tavarez and Hedger executed a double steal, with Hedger sliding into home with an insurance run in the sixth, to provide the final count.

Hedger collected two of Brandywine's seven hits, while Wright and Skeans both scored a pair of runs.

Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) earned his first win of the season on the mound. He tossed 1.2 innings of relief, allowing one unearned run, while striking out one. Ty Coccia (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) fired two scoreless frames and fanned a pair of Gothic Knights as he picked up the save. Matt Brucato (Jamesburg, N.J./Washington Twp.) yielded three runs on four hits during the first 3.1 innings.

After a day off, Brandywine (3-4) plays its final games of the RussMatt Invitational Wednesday against Wentworth beginning at 12:00 PM.
