Brandywine Opens Conference Play With 7-2 Senior Night Victory

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine celebrated Senior Night by defeated Penn State York 7-2 in the opening game of a three-game weekend series and the first Penn State University Athletic Conference baseball game of the year for both teams Friday night.

Connor Thompson (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) went all nine innings to earn his second victory of the season. He struck out two, while limiting York to two runs on five hits. Thompson recorded 19 groundball outs on the night, including the final out of the game on a comebacker to the mound.

Brandywine answered York's first-inning run with two of its own during the bottom of the frame. Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) worked a leadoff walk and scored on an error, while Tyler Brooks (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored via Kyle Oechsle's (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades) groundout.

The Lions needed just one hit to add three more runs to the lead in the fourth. Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) walked, stole two bases and crossed home following an error. Three batters later, Baughman delivered a two-out, two-run double to make the count 5-1.

Another error allowed Oechsle to score in the fifth, while Wright's groundout scored Brooks with the Lions' final tally in the seventh.

Brandywine tallied just three hits, but worked eight walks and took advantage of five York errors. The Lions also stole seven bases as Wright and Hayden Altimari (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony) both swiped two and Brooks, Oechsle and Dalton Palmer (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) all stole one.

Brandywine (6-7, 1-0 PSUAC) and York close out the three-game series Saturday at People's Bank Park in York at 12:00 PM.
