Brandywine Clinches PSUAC Tournament Bid In Season-Ending Split

HAZLETON, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine got the doubleheader split it needed against Penn State Hazleton to earn a postseason berth for the ninth consecutive season on Saturday afternoon. The Lions bounced back from a 5-2, game one loss to win the nightcap 11-8 and clinch the No. 3 seed in the upcoming PSUAC Baseball Tournament.

Game One: Penn State Hazleton 5, Penn State Brandywine 2

Hazleton struck for three runs during the third inning and held a 3-0 lead until the sixth when Brandywine scored its two runs.

The Lions loaded the bases with no outs as Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) and Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) walked and Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) singled. Baughman crossed home on Tyler Brooks' (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) groundout, while Shaun Lima (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) singled in Abegg.

After Hazleton padded its lead with two insurance runs in the sixth, Brandywine threatened during its final at-bat. Two errors and a walk issued to Baughman loaded the bases with one out, but a line drive double play ended the Brandywine rally.

Greg Adams (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) pitched all six innings, allowing five runs (three earned), while striking out four. Brooks tallied two of Brandywine's four hits and stole a base to pace the offense.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 11, Penn State Hazleton 8

Six Hazleton errors were the difference in game two as Brandywine fended off the hosts during its final regular-season game.

Hazleton scored single runs in the second and third innings and held a 2-1 edge through three frames; however, the Lions needed just three hits to score six times in the fourth.

After back-to-back base hits from Brooks and Mike DeGirolamo (Fredrick, Md./Fredrick) to begin the inning, both came around to score via Hazleton error. Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) followed with a two-run double and later scored thanks to a Hazleton miscue. Wright's groundout scored Baughman with the sixth run of the inning, upping Brandywine's lead to 7-2.

Hazleton immediately answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to pull within one, but Brandywine busted the game back open with four scores in the sixth. Three runners crossed home on a Hazleton error, while Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Brooks to score.

The hosts did not go away quietly, scoring once in the sixth and again in the seventh before bringing the potential game-tying run to the plate with two outs; however, Dan Nearey (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) got Eddie Wess to groundout to end the game.

Nearey struck out five in a complete-game effort to earn his third win of the spring.

Baughman and Brooks both recorded two hits and two runs scored, while Webb drove in two runs. Brooks also recorded two stolen bases.

Brandywine (17-15, 10-5 PSUAC) will face No. 2 Penn State York in an elimination game of the PSUAC Tournament at Penn State Schuylkill Saturday at a time to be determined.
