Brandywine Claims Senior Day Battle With Beaver 1-0

MEDIA, Pa. -- In a showdown of the two undefeated teams in Penn State University Athletic Conference men's soccer, Penn State Brandywine came out on top, dealing Penn State Beaver its first league loss, 1-0, on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.

Physical from the outset, the match featured just one goal: a penalty kick off the foot of Axel Ayllon-Ortiz (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) early in the second half.

The Lions defense and goalkeeper Juan Guerrero (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) posted their sixth shutout in seven league matches. Brandywine held Beaver, which came into Saturday averaging nearly five goals per game, to just five total shots. Guerrero needed to make three saves to record his fifth shutout of the year and eighth victory.

The majority of the scoring chances belonged to Brandywine during the first half, but neither team could break through on the scoreboard through 45 minutes.

After a teammate was knocked down in the box, Ayllon-Ortiz drove his team-leading eight goal, fifth via penalty kick, of the year just under the crossbar to put Brandywine in front.

Despite playing a man down for the final 25 minutes, Brandywine limited Beaver to just two shots, both of which were easily turned aside by Guerrero.

Winners of 42-straight PSUAC matches, Brandywine (13-4-1, 8-0 PSUAC) can clinch the PSUAC regular-season title Wednesday. The Lions visit Penn State Lehigh Valley at 4:00 pm for their final league match of the season.
