Brandywine Eases Past Scranton

ASTON, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine outscored Penn State Scranton 37-3 en route to a PSUAC softball doubleheader sweep on Wednesday afternoon. Brandywine was a 12-1 winner in game one and captured game two by a 25-2 count.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 12, Penn State Scranton 1

Brandywine needed just six hits to score its 12 runs in game one, taking advantage of 12 walks.

Fiona Warren (Schwenksville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) recorded an RBI single and Rachel Cherubini (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) added a two-run double during an eight-run first inning.

Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) and Alyssa Sullivan (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) both tallied run-scoring base hits two frames later.

Cherubini collected two hits, while Segich stole two bases, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice. Nikki Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City) and Alexandra Szpindor (Pottstown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) also crossed home two times.

Taylor Baron (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) upped her record to 4-0 in the circle this spring. She struck out five and limited Scranton to one run on three hits in five innings.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 25, Penn State Scranton 2

Haley Grossi (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) paced the offense with four hits, three runs scored and two RBI, while Cara Fabiano (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) added three hits, scored three times and drove in a trio of runs. The Lions had six players collect at least two hits and 10 got in the hit column overall.

Brandywine scored in all five innings, plating three runs during each of the first two innings and adding one more in the third. The Lions scored nine times in the fourth and nine more runs crossed the plate in the fifth.

Sullivan posted a team-high five RBI along with two hits and two runs scored. Szpindor recorded two hits and knocked in three runs, while Cherubini reached base in all six at-bats, scoring five times, while producing two RBI. Segich also had two hits and crossed home twice.

Rebecca Proctor (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) earned her first win of the season by holding Scranton to two runs on three hits. She fanned three in five innings.

Brandywine (17-15, 8-2 PSUAC) concludes the regular season when it hosts Scranton on Monday for Senior Day beginning at 3:00 pm.
