Malfara, Segich Hit Milestones On Senior Day

ASTON, Pa. -- Seniors Maddie Malfara (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) and Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) both reached a personal milestone as the fourth-year players celebrated their Senior Day by helping Penn State Brandywine earn a pair of victories over Penn State Scranton on Monday afternoon. Malfara recorded her 100th hit during a 15-0 triumph in game one, while Segich became the first player in team history with 200 career hits in a 10-1 win in the nightcap.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 15, Penn State Scranton 0

Needing two hits to reach 100, Malfara tallied a pair of singles during a 12-run first inning to become the sixth player in team history to hit the 100-hit mark.

Malfara's first hit was a run-scoring single, while Alexandra Szpindor (Pottstown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) and Alyssa Sullivan (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) collected back-to-back RBI doubles during the frame. Morgan Meoli (Woolwich Twp., N.J./Kingsway Regional) sped around the bases for an inside-the-park three-run home run to make the score 6-0 and later added a sacrifice fly.

Szpindor had two hits, also tallying a run-scoring single in the second, as did Rachel Cherubini (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove). Segich provided the 15th run with a RBI double in the third.

Brandywine racked up nine hits and six different players scored two runs. Szpindor and Malfara both tallied two hits, while Meoli drove in four runs.

Cara Fabiano (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) recorded her ninth win of the year, striking out three in three innings of work. She yielded just one hit and did not walk a batter.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 10, Penn State Scranton 1

Segich dropped down a bunt single to lead off the first inning in game two for the 200th of her career. Segich, Sullivan and Brianna Donaghy (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia Academy Charter) all had two hits, while Malfara added three more knocks to her total. Segich also stole two bases, giving her 51 for the season and 148 for her career, both school records.

Brandywine plated six runs in the first inning, receiving RBI doubles from Malfara and Fabiano and a run-scoring base hit by Meoli.

The Lions tacked on two more in the second and Sullivan ended the game by run rule in five innings, crushing her a two-run home run, her third of the year, after Malfara tripled to lead off the frame.

Szpindor fanned seven as she went the distance for her fifth victory of the year. She allowed just two hits and one unearned run in five innings.

Brandywine (19-15, 10-2 PSUAC) will face Penn State Hazleton on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 pm in a one-game tiebreaker to determine the PSUAC East Division champion. The teams, which split the season series 2-2, will meet at Big Vision Sports in Leesport, Pa.

The winner of Wednesday's game advances to DuBois for the double-elimination portion of the PSUAC Tournament, while the loser will face No. 3 Penn State Schuylkill in an elimination game of the tournament on Friday.
