Softball Trio Claims All-American Honors From USCAA

MEDIA, Pa. -- Three Penn State Brandywine softball student-athletes were selected as all-Americans during the United States Collegiate Athletic Association end-of-year banquet on Sunday afternoon. Senior Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) earned first team accolades, while freshman Alexandra Szpindor (Pottstown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) secured second team honors and classmate Alyssa Sullivan (Pennsburg, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) was selected as all-America honorable mention.

Segich was the catalyst at the top of the lineup for Brandywine's offense as she led the USCAA in stolen bases and ranked second in both hits and runs scored. She set single-season team records in all three categories, tallying 68 steals, 57 hits and 54 runs scored. This spring marked Segich's fourth consecutive season with 50-plus hits.

Now a three-time all-American, Segich batted .375 with two home runs and 19 runs batted in. She hit safely in 33 of the Lions' 44 games and stole at least one bag in all but nine contests.

Segich finished her 152-game career as Brandywine's all-time leader with 212 hits, 192 runs scored and 165 stolen bases.

Szpindor was one of the top utility players in the USCAA, seeing time in the outfield, as a pitcher and designated player this spring. At the plate, she posted a team-high 44 RBI, ranking sixth in the USCAA, while batting .396 with 53 hits. Her team-best 19 extra-base hits stand sixth nationally, including three home runs, matching Sullivan for the team lead.

In the circle, Szpindor won eight games, with two of those victories coming in elimination games at the USCAA World Series, in 22 appearances. She struck out 40 hitters during 100.2 innings, throwing 11 complete games.

Sullivan batted in the middle of the Lions' order all season, playing in all 44 games. She was one of just seven players in the USCAA to drive in 40 runs and collected 52 hits for a .388 batting average. Thirteen of her hits went for extra bases.

During a 19-day stretch from Mar. 28-Apr. 16, Sullivan hit safely in 14-straight games, the fifth-longest streak in team history.

Brandywine finished the year with a record of 26-18 after winning its fifth-straight conference championship and posting a fourth consecutive top-five finish at the USCAA World Series.
