Fast Start Propels Lions Over Greater Allegheny

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine started the game on a 21-2 run and never looked back as the Lions routed Penn State Greater Allegheny 85-51 on Saturday afternoon.

Nikki Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City) canned a trio of three-pointers during the first 1:51 of the game, putting Brandywine on top 9-0 early. The Lions continued to roll, scoring 21 of first 23 points, growing the margin to 19 points following Madison D'Ambrosio's (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) triple at the 3:29 mark.

The Lions saw the lead swell to 20 points on Velez's fourth three-pointer midway through the second quarter, but Greater Allegheny trimmed the deficit to 14 at the break, scoring eight of the final 10 points of the half.

GA was within 11 with 6:57 to go in the third quarter, but D'Ambrosio's three-pointer opened a 10-2 run and the rest of the game would belong to Brandywine. The Lions led 69-49 entering the final period and a 14-0 surge spanning three minutes put the game out of reach.

All seven of Velez's field goals came from long range as she paced all players with 24 points, while D'Ambrosio shot 6-11 from the field, netting 16 points, along with seven rebounds and five assists.

Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) and Chantel Hatton (Philadelphia, Pa./Chester) both produced nine points. Floyd added a team-best eight rebounds and six assists.

Brandywine recorded 19 assists on 27 field goals and knocked down 11 three-pointers. 

The Lions (5-3, 4-1 PSUAC) face Penn State Schuylkill Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
