Volleyball Adds Six-Member Recruiting Class To 2018 Roster

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine women's volleyball team and Head Coach Fabiana Scavicchio-Fields released the class of 2022 student-athletes who have enrolled at the campus and will compete for the Lions this fall on Monday.

A group of six new recruits will be added to the roster, which is currently comprised of six returning letter winners from the 2017 team that went undefeated in Penn State University Athletic Conference play, earning the second conference title in program history, while advancing to the United States College Athletic Association Tournament.

The 2018 incoming class includes Alsatia Haas-Tome, Jade Maloney, Julia Miles, Sarah Navarrete, Sydney Stevens and Madison Swenson.

Haas-Tome arrives at Brandywine with four years of high school volleyball experience at nearby Interboro High School, where she was named the team's most improved player during her senior season.

"[Brandywine] is close to home," said Haas-Tome. "There's just such good spirit and kind energy within the school and it has my major."

Maloney will join the Lions this fall after competing as a two-sport athlete at Brandywine High School in Wilmington, Delaware. A three-year letter winner in volleyball, Maloney earned two all-conference first team honors for the Bulldogs, while also playing two years of varsity basketball.

"I want to continue my education while still being an athlete," said Maloney.

Miles, a four-year varsity member of the Chichester High School volleyball team, where she was a member of two Del-Val League championship teams. During her time at Chichester, Miles earned Second Team All-Delco and the Coach's Award, while also receiving the school's Eagle Award. She will reunite this fall will Scavicchio-Fields, who served as co-head coach at Chichester from 2014-16. 

"I chose Brandywine because it is close to my hometown and it's a great school that's gives you so many opportunities," said Miles.

Navarrete makes her way to Brandywine out of Oxford. After starting her high school career at Kennett High School where she played volleyball as a sophomore, Navarrete headed to Avon Grove Charter where she would finish her career, earning team captain honors as a senior.

"It's always been a dream to go to Penn State," said Navarette. "Penn State Brandywine was the closest so I can commute."

Stevens will continue her volleyball career at Brandywine after playing four years of varsity volleyball at Alexis I. DuPont High School in Delaware. While competing for the Tigers, Stevens earned two all-conference honorable mention honors.

"[Brandywine] has a small campus, which is what I prefer," said Stevens.

Swenson, who competed in four years of volleyball at Kennett High School, served as team captain during both her junior and senior seasons. She also received the Booster Club Excellence Award as a senior.

On why she chose Penn State Brandywine, Swenson stated "I like how small the campus is so that my professors can get to know who I am. I also like being able to discuss any concerns I might be having with my professors."

Brandywine opens the 2018 season at home on Sepetmber 4 versus Wilkes University.
