Brandywine Honors Student-Athletes At Annual Awards Banquet

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine honored over 100 student-athletes during its 30th-annual athletics awards banquet on Wednesday night on campus inside Parsons Hall.

Guest speaker Peggy Schipper, the president of Penn State Brandywine's advisory board, spoke of Penn State's values, the liftime of impact the University can have on its gradutes and the vast alumni network Penn State offers before the celebration the campus' second-straight Chancellors' Cup title and six Penn State University Athletic Conference championships during the 2017-18 academic year began.

A total of 34 student-athletes received All-PSUAC recognition and 16 were named all-American by the USCAA, while on the academic side, 91 student-athletes claimed Academic All-PSUAC laurels and 17 landed USCAA National Academic Team awards throughout the season.

Additionally, the athletic department handed out its three major awards: the James King Memorial Award, the Michael W. Menichini Memorial Award and the Lloyd Vernon Heart of a Lion Award.

Softball senior Julie Foeldes received the James King Memorial Award, given annually to Brandywine's top student-athlete, incorporating athletic prowess, campus involvement and academic standing. Foeldes, who also earned the John S. Egli Scholar-Athlete Award from the PSUAC and Student-Athlete of the Year from the USCAA, graduated from Penn State with a 3.98 grade-point average and will begin pursuing a doctorate degree in school psychology in the fall at Rutgers University.

The Lloyd Vernon Heart of a Lion Award is named in honor of late tennis coach Lloyd Vernon. A proud Penn Stater, Coach Vernon battled cancer for nearly his entire tenure at Brandywine, while still maintaining two of the top teams in the conference and teaching tennis classes to Brandywine students. Coach Vernon devoted his time and energy to the program and the athletic department and truly showed the heart of a lion during his time at Brandywine.

Earning the Lloyd Vernon Heart of a Lion Award was sophomore Danielle Chattin. Chattin, a two-sport athlete who competes for the women's soccer and women's basketball teams, aided both squads in winning PSUAC titles during the year. She is a four-time conference champion and two-time PSUAC All-Academic selection during her two years at Brandywine.

This year's recipient of the Michael W. Menichini Award was kinesiology professor Barbara Rostick. The Menichini Award recognizes an individual or office on campus that displays dedication and service to Penn State Brandywine athletics throughout the year.
