Ten Fall Student-Athletes Earn National Academic Recognition From USCAA

MEDIA, Pa. -- Ten Penn State Brandywine student-athletes representing four fall teams earned recognition on the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Academic Teams announced recently.

Those honored included four members of the women's soccer team: Brianna Banks, Angelina Maroulis, Cayla Pun and Rachel Weir; three men's soccer student-athletes: Joey Cairy, Stevie DiSipio and Dom Scrivano; and three cross country student-athletes: Brian Abel, Ryan Cassidy and Catharine Mooney.

The USCAA National Academic Team award honors student-athletes during each season who have compiled a grade-point average of at least 3.50 and reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution. No Penn State University Athletic Conference campus had more honorees than Brandywine.

Abel, Cassidy and Mooney, all sophomores, each earned their first USCAA National Academic Team honor. Last week, Abel and Mooney became the first two cross country all-Americans in Brandywine history, finishing in 13th and 14th place, respectively, at the USCAA National Championships in Virginia Beach.

Brandywine's men's soccer trio was also all first-time honorees. Cairy and Scrivano both earned all-conference honors this fall, while DiSipio was received the John Fritz Sportsmanship Award from the PSUAC. The Lions won their fourth-straight conference title in October.

Banks, Maroulis and Weir all concluded their careers with their third academic award. Banks, a four-time PSUAC Player of the Year and Brandywine's first-ever USCAA Player of the Year, and Weir also received all-American awards from the USCAA, while Pun was a first-time honoree after completing her first year with the team as a sophomore. Brandywine captured its fourth consecutive conference championship earlier this fall.
