Brandywine Falls Against Bethel, West Virginia Tech

VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Penn State Brandywine baseball team mustered just two runs as the Lions were defeated 11-1 by Bethel College (Ind.) and dropped a 6-1 decision to West Virginia Tech on Wednesday at Dodgertown.

Bethel brought a 4-0 lead into the fifth inning of game one before exploding for a six-run frame to pull away for the win.

Brandywine was limited to six hits, five singles and a triple by Kevin Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Rustin). Matt Masi (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) drove in the Lions' only run with a bases-loaded groundout in the fifth inning.

Gautam Goswamy (Coatesville, Pa./Collegium Charter) allowed three earned runs in four innings of work during his first college start and took the loss, while Matt Staiber (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) limited Bethel to one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Against WVU Tech, Brandywine put runners on base during all seven innings, but pushed across just one run on Masi's solo home run in the fourth, his second long ball of the season.

The Golden Bears scored two runs in the third and two more in the fourth before tacking on single insurance tallies during each of their final two at-bats.

Tyler Michaels (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) tossed the first four innings on the mound, allowing four runs, while striking out one and suffered the loss. John Grader (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) fanned three and surrendered two runs (one earned) in two relief innings.

Joey Buoni (Chester Heights, Pa./Salesianum) recorded two of Brandywine's seven base hits.

Brandywine closes out its Spring Break trip on Thursday against PSUAC-rival Penn State Beaver at 1:00 pm.
