Brandywine Drives Past Scranton 13-2 In PSUAC Opener

ASTON, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine baseball team opened its PSUAC slate with a 13-2, five-inning victory over Penn State Scranton on Friday evening.

John Gorgone (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) worked three walks, recorded two stolen bases and scored three runs, while Kevin Roche (Malvern, Pa./Chaminade College Prep (Calif.)) also crossed home three times. Tommy Crumlish (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner), Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) and Chris Skahill (Media, Pa./Penncrest) all recorded a pair of hits and both Reynolds and Skahill knocked in two runs.

The Scranton defense was late arriving as the visitors committed three errors and allowed Brandywine to steal seven bases during the first four innings.

The Lions scored at least once during each turn at the plate. Gorgone got the scoring started in the first when he walked and late scored on a wild pitch, while Reynolds drove in Will Scott-Norris (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant) with a ground out.

Skahill and Scott-Norris both tallied RBI triples in the second sandwiched around a Gorgone sacrifice fly. Crumlish added an RBI base hit in the third, while Reynolds and Robert Spitaletta (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) each collected run-scoring hits one frame later.

Bradley Ulmer (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech) picked up his first win of the season as he went all five innings on the mound, striking out two, while allowing two earned runs on five hits.

Brandywine and Scranton close out the three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm.
