Brandywine Extends Winning Streak To Four Games With Win At Hazleton

FREELAND, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine baseball team pushed its winning streak to four games by downing Penn State Hazleton 6-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Drifton Baseball Complex.

Brandywine was held hitless through three innings by Hazleton starter Ryan Taras before Matt Masi (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) delivered a single to left field, scoring Robert Spitaletta (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) with the game's first run.

The Lions added to their lead in the fourth as John Gorgone (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) doubled with two outs, allowing Brett Sheeran (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) to score after he reached base when he was hit by a pitch. Gorgone moved to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on a Hazleton error.

Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) made the score 5-0 in the seventh inning when his two-out base hit pushed Spitaletta and Gorgone across the plate, while Sheeran's RBI single one inning later accounted for the Lions' sixth run.

Gorgone extended his hitting streak to eight games and reached base three times in five plate appearances overall, while also scoring twice. Spitaletta also crossed home twice and stole two bases and Masi added two stolen bases.

Bradley Ulmer (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech) gained his second win of the season after firing the first 7.0 innings on the mound. Ulmer allowed just one earned run on five hits, while striking out two during his longest outing of the season.

Joe Batcho (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Nate Forwood (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant) finished off Hazleton by striking out two in a scoreless ninth.

Brandywine (9-15, 7-2 PSUAC) and Hazleton play two more times on Friday afternoon on Brandywine's campus beginning at 2:00 pm.
