Brandywine Drops Final Games At RussMatt Invitational

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Pitt-Greensburg claimed both ends of a doubleheader as the Penn State Brandywine baseball team dropped its final two games at the RussMatt Invitational by scores of 7-4 and 7-1 on Wednesday morning.

Game One: Pitt-Greensburg 7, Penn State Brandywine 4

Pitt-Greensburg scored five times in the top of the seventh to rally for a game one victory.

The Bobcats recorded five singles and took advantage of an error and a walk to turn a two-run deficit into a five-run lead during their final at-bat.

Brandywine had taken a 4-2 edge into the seventh after scoring twice in the sixth. Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) led off the inning with a single, stole second and later scored via balk. Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) followed with a base hit that scored Jimmy Carey (Springfield, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) to up the margin to 4-2.

After trailing 2-0 entering the fourth frame, Brandywine got the offense going with two outs, scoring a pair of runs. Webb was hit by a pitch and after swiping second base, scored on a single from Kyle Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades). Oechsle then tied the game as he scored from second via UPG error.

Dan Nearey (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) struck out five Bobcats during the first three innings, while Matt Brucato (Jamesburg, N.J./Monroe Township) tossed three innings of scoreless relief, striking out one. Wright recorded two of the offense's five hits, while Webb stole two bases and scored twice.

Game Two: Pitt-Greensburg 7, Penn State Brandywine 1

Brandywine's offense was limited to just a trio of singles in game two as the Lions fell 7-1.

Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) produced two of the base hits, while Evan Abegg (Commercer City, Colo./Prairie View) tallied a seventh-inning single.

UPG plated an unearned run in the first and tacked on fourth runs on five hits in the third.

Brandywine scored its long run of the contest in the top of the second when Webb lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that was deep enough to score Evan Shade (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen).

Connor Thompson (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing four earned runs on eight hits in five innings. He struck out four.

After returning home, Brandywine will open a three-game series versus Gwynedd Mercy on Friday, March 17 at Maple Zone beginning at 6:00 PM.
