Gwynedd Mercy Tops Brandywine In Series Opener

ASTON, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine baseball team dropped the opening game of a three-game, weekend series to Gwynedd Mercy University, falling 9-2 on Friday night.

The Griffins scored the game's first run with two outs in the first inning. Gwynedd took the lead for good by plating three runs during the sixth inning and tacked on five more runs in the ninth.

Brandywine's two scores came during the third inning. Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) singled with one out and moved to third following Shawn Webb's (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) two-base hit. Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) then scored both runners by doubling into the left-center field gap.

The Lions tallied nine hits, including two-hit efforts from Baughman, Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) and Kyle Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades).

Connor Thompson (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) suffered the loss despite allowing just two earned runs and six hits over seven innings. Thompson struck out one Griffin.

Brandywine (5-6) and Gwynedd Mercy meet again Saturday at Father Judge High School beginning at 11:00 AM.
