Brandywine Takes Two From Valley Forge

ASTON, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Valley Forge, posting victories by scores of 11-1 and 6-3 on Tuesday evening.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 11, Valley Forge 1

Brandywine scored early and often, plating a run in every inning to ease to the victory in game one.

The Lions pounded out 12 hits, while Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) limited Valley Forge to just one hit and one run, while striking out three during his first appearance on the mound this spring. Brown yielded just a third-inning triple before retiring the final six batters he faced in a complete-game effort.

Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) led the hit parade for the Lions with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, while Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) and Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) both scored three runs. Baughman, Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) and Owen Lawton (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) all tallied two hits.

Baughman singled, Abegg walked and Wright singled to set the table for Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick), who delivered a two-run double to start the first inning. Kyle Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades) and Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) both added sacrifice flies for a 4-0 Brandywine lead through one inning.

Wright recorded a run-scoring single, while Abegg stole third and scored via error to up the margin to 6-0 through two frames. Skeans crossed home following an error in the third and Wright added a sacrifice fly in the fourth before Brandywine tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Skeans, Baughman and Abegg started the inning with consecutive singles and all came around to score, providing the final margin.

DeGirolamo produced a three-RBI effort, while Wright and Webb knocked in two runs. Baughman and Abegg both stole two bases.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 6, Valley Forge 3

The Lions spotted the Patriots three runs, but battled back by scoring the final six runs of the game to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Wright's two-out single drove in Jaylen Bryant (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School of Telecommunications) with Brandywine's first run.

Two innings later, Brandywine took the lead as its first seven batters reached safely during a five-run frame. Abegg tripled in Baughman and scored on Wright's base hit to tie the score. Following a walk, Webb sent a triple to the left field fence, pushing to more runners across. Webb came home via Brown's two-base hit, upping the lead to 6-3. Wright tallied two more hits for a five-hit day, while Bryant also collected a pair of hits.

Brandywine totaled 10 hits, including four that went for extra bases. Seven pitchers all went one inning on the mound for the Lions. Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) was the winning pitcher after tossing a perfect fifth inning. Skeans picked up his second save after firing a scoreless seventh inning.

Brandywine (8-7) begins conference play at home on Thursday against Penn State Scranton at 5:00 PM.
