Brandywine Completes Four-Game Sweep Of Scranton

ASTON, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine baseball team defeated Penn State Scranton by scores of 15-3 and 9-6 to claim a four-game sweep of the season series on Friday night.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 15, Penn State Scranton 3

Brandywine produced 11 hits and worked 13 bases on balls to claim the night's opening game.

Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) went 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) collected two hits, including a two-run home run, and drove in three. Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) added three RBI; Kyle Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades) knocked in a pair; and Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) collected two singles.

Webb's long ball highlighted a three-run first inning. Scranton cut into the Lions' lead by scoring runs in the second and third innings, but the Lions put the game out of reach by scoring four times in the fifth. Webb delivered a run-scoring single and Oechsle added a two RBI base hit, while Skeans drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Brandywine needed just one hit to record eight runs over the final two innings.

Dan Nearey (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) was on the mound for the first six innings, striking out eight, while allowing two runs and six hits, to earn his second win. Justin Bray (Christiana, Pa./Octorara) pitched the seventh inning, recording one strikeout.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 9, Penn State Scranton 6

Walks and errors were the story again in game two as Brandywine took advantage of eight free passes and four Scranton miscues.

Despite scoring during each of its first three at-bats, Brandywine found itself trailing 6-4 going to the fourth inning, but the Lions put a four spot on the board to jump back in front. Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) walked, stole second and scored via error, while Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) crossed home with the tying run following Nick Wright's (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) double. A groundout from Webb was enough to score Wright with the go-ahead run and Brown capped the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Webb laced a leadoff triple and scored via Jesse Davis' (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) groundout to add an insurance run in the sixth.

Oechsle tallied two hits and stole three bases, while Wright collected two hits, two RBI and a stolen base. Webb, Wright and Baughman all crossed home twice.

Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) earned his second win of the season. He tossed four innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits, while fanning six. Michael Govan (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) earned his second save as he fired a scoreless seventh inning and struck out two.

Brandywine (12-7, 4-0 PSUAC) is on the road Tuesday at Penn State Berks (3:00 PM).
