Brandywine Claims Weekend Series After Sunday Split

BERWICK, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine baseball team split a doubleheader at Penn State Hazleton on Sunday and in the process won the season series by taking three-of-four games from Hazleton. The Lions dropped game one 13-3 before rebounding to win the nightcap 13-1.

Game One: Penn State Hazleton 13, Penn State Brandywine 3

Hazleton scored in every inning except the first and took advantage of eight walks issued by Brandywine pitching to win the opener.

Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) scored on a balk in the first inning and posted an RBI double in the fourth. Abegg recorded two hits and stole a base, while Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) also had two hits. Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) added the Lions' third run with a fourth inning sacrifice fly.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 13, Penn State Hazleton 1

Brandywine avenged its loss by rolling to a 13-1 victory in game two behind a 15-hit effort from the offense.

Webb tallied three hits, drove in three runs and scored twice, while Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) collected three hits and crossed home three times. Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley), Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem), Kyle Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades) and Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) all registered two hits.

Webb doubled in two runs and scored on Brown's base hit to give the Lions a 3-0 edge though one inning. Back-to-back doubles to start the second inning by Skeans and Oechsle upped the margin to 4-0 and Oechsle later scored on a sacrifice fly from Abegg.

Brandywine added four more runs in the third as Skeans' single pushed Brown across the plate and three more runners touched home following an error.

Webb led off the fourth inning with his third home run of the season, while Skeans produced his second RBI single of the game. Jesse Davis (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) came around to score on Jimmy Carey's (Springfield, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) groundout to cap the scoring in the fifth.

Abel Bartosek (Fort Worth, Texas/Chisholm Trail) earned the win after going the distance on the mound. He limited Hazleton to one run on three hits, while striking out three over five innings of work.

Brandywine (15-8, 7-1 PSUAC) visits Marywood Monday for a non-conference game beginning at 3:00 PM.
