Brandywine Falls On Final Day Of RussMatt Invitational

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Penn State Brandywine baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Elms College, falling by scores of 6-0 and 7-3, on Wednesday afternoon.

Game One: Elms 6, Penn State Brandywine 0

A six-run third inning was the difference as the Lions dropped a 6-0 decision in game one.

The Blazers loaded the bases with no outs in the third and used a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the day. Three two-out singles pushed five additional runs across the plate.

Brandywine had a hit in every inning, but was unable to muster a run offensively. The Lions left the bases loaded in the top of the third inning and stranded two runners on base in the fifth.

Sam Benvignati (Aston, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) was 3-for-3 with a trio of singles, while Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) and Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) both doubled in three at-bats.

Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) fired 3.1 scoreless innings in relief of Jaylen Bryant (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School of Telecommunications). Snyder struck out two, while Bryant recorded four strikeouts and allowed six runs on seven hits in 2.2 frames.

Game Two: Elms 7, Penn State Brandywine 3

Brandywine dropped its final game of the Spring Break trip by a count of 7-3.

The Lions trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the second inning before getting on the scoreboard for the first time. Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) worked a leadoff walk and later scored on Skeans' groundout.

The Blazers scored two more runs to make the score 4-1 in the third, but Brandywine answered with a pair of runs during the bottom of the frame. Benvignati walked with one out and came around to score when Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) launched a two-run home run over the left field fence.

Elms answered with a fourth-inning score and tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. A trio of Elms relievers held Brandywine off the scoreboard for the final 4.1 frames.

Baughman, Brown, DeGirolamo and Snyder recorded hits for the Lions, while Benvignati and Brown both worked a pair of walks. Connor Thompson (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) highlighted three Brandywine pitchers by tossing 3.0 innings, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out two.

Brandywine (3-5) hosts Valley Forge at Glen Mills School Tuesday beginning at 3:00 PM.
