Beaver Knocks Off Brandywine 98-77

MONACA, Pennsylvania -- Penn State Beaver handed Penn State Brandywine a 98-77 PSUAC men's basketball defeat Saturday night.

The teams exchanged the lead throughout opening 10 minutes before Willie James' bucket gave Beaver a 17-15 advantage near the midway point of the half. Beaver extended its lead to double figures by using an 11-2 surge, aided by six points from Marcus Smith.

Brandywine was within six following Chris Lyons' (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) jumper at the 4:55 mark, but Beaver responded with nine-straight points and led 44-30 at the half.

The Lions trailed by 16 when Cyrie Spencer (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park) and James Fisher (Philadelphia, Pa./Upper Darby) connected on three-pointers that aided in a 12-4 spurt. Lyons capped the run, which brought Brandywine within eight, by sinking two-straight jumpers.

D.J. Austin answered with a triple that pushed Brandywine's deficit back to double figures and, four minutes later, Eric Gallupe connected on a three-pointer that extended Beaver's edge to 17. Brandywine would not get closer than 14 the rest of the way.

Spencer paced four Lions in double-digit scoring with 21 points, while Fisher added 17. Lyons scored 14 points and Pat O'Neill (Morton, Pa./Ridley) tallied 11.

Spencer grabbed nine boards, while O'Neill pulled down seven and Fisher snagged six, along with three assists.

Brandywine shot 44 percent from the field, but connected on just 11-of-25 free throws. Beaver made 46 percent of its shots and was led by James, who scored 16 points off the bench.

Brandywine (0-15, 0-7 PSUAC) continues its road trip Sunday against Penn State Greater Allegheny at 3:00 pm.
