Balanced Scoring Effort Leads Brandywine To Victory Over Manor

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine men's basketball team received double-figure scoring from five players as the Lions topped Manor College 87-84 in the opening round of their home tournament Saturday night.

Jamar Wright (Wilmington, Del./Conrad School of Science) led the scoring effort with 15 points, while Bryce Barrouk (Glen Mills, Pa./Rustin) tallied 14 points and Johnta Dunson (Philadelphia, Pa./Freire Charter) collected 13 points. Colin Hockenbrock (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) and Ketquan Gatewood (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Collegiate Prep) both added 11 points.

Brandywine led by two points at the midway point of the first half, but Dunson's three-point play followed by back-to-back triples from Wright and Dean Kane (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) pushed Brandywine in front by 11, their largest lead of the opening half.

Manor cut the deficit to two points with 1:08 to go in the opening period, but Tim Mattern (Lincoln University, Pa./Salesianum) sank a layup with 17 seconds to play for a 42-38 Brandywine lead at the break.

The Lions began the second half by scoring on their first five possessions as the lead grew back to double figures. Manor continued to hang around, narrowing the margin to three points on two occasions over the next 12 minutes, but each time Brandywine had an answer on the offensive end.

A Gatewood triple and two free throws from Jordan Graves (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) once again swelled Brandywine's lead to 11 points before the Blue Jays made a late charge.

Trailing by six with 33 seconds to play, Manor sank a free throw to get the score to 85-80. Following two Brandywine free throws, Manor's Isaiah Leonard sank a layup and Anthony Floyd quickly produced a steal and layup to get the Blue Jays within three.

Manor had a chance to tie the score as time expired, but a three-pointer was off the mark.

Brandywine, which shot 50 percent from the field, but made just 16-of-36 free throws, received 10 rebounds and three blocked shots from Barrouk. Gatewood pulled down eight boards, while Hockenbrock grabbed seven, along with four steals.

Brandywine (2-1) will face Berkeley College in the tournament championship Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM.
