Barrouk’s 36 Not Enough; Brandywine Falls In Tournament Championship Game

MEDIA, Pa. -- Despite a career-high 36 points from Bryce Barrouk (Glen Mills, Pa./Rustin), the Penn State Brandywine men's basketball team was defeated 73-70 by Berkeley College in the Lions' home tournament championship game Sunday afternoon.

Barrouk poured in 15 points over the first 13 minutes to help Brandywine build a three-point lead; however, with Brandywine on top 24-19, Foday Sacco knocked down a triple to start a run of 11-0 and the Knights opened up a 30-24 lead.

The Lions netted the final three points of the half, including two Jordan Graves (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) free throws with nine seconds left, to climb within three at the break.

Berkeley opened up an eight-point margin early in the second period, but Barrouk recorded a three-point play, knocked down a triple, and Colin Hockenbrock (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) sank two free throws to quickly knot the count at 44-44.

Dontel Henry countered with a three-pointer for Berkeley and the Knights would push their lead as large as seven points four more times during the half.

Trailing 71-64 with 2:28 to play, Johnta Dunson (Philadelphia, Pa./Freire Charter) made a layup to draw Brandywine within five. Fifty-six seconds later, Barrouk connected on a pair of free throws and later added a layup on the Lions' ensuing possession as Brandywine pulled within one at the 1:06 mark.

Two Berkeley free throws made the count 73-70 with nine seconds to play. Brandywine had an opportunity to tie just before the buzzer, but Barrouk's three-pointer was off the mark and the Lions' comeback bid ran out of time.

Barrouk shot 13-of-20 from the field, canned five three-pointers and pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.

Dunson and Hockenbrock each chipped in nine points, while Ketquan Gatewood (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Collegiate Prep) grabbed seven rebounds and Graves tallied four steals.

Brandywine (2-2) opens conference play Tuesday night at Penn State York (8:00 pm).
