Brandywine Falls Short In Conference Opener

YORK, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine men's basketball team could not overcome a nine-point halftime deficit and dropped its Penn State University Athletic Conference opener 74-63 at Penn State York on Tuesday night.

York's biggest lead of the opening half came at the buzzer as Mitch Saxon knocked down a three-pointer with two seconds left on the clock to send the hosts into halftime with a 33-24 lead.

Ketquan Gatewood (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Collegiate Prep) and Bryce Barrouk (Glen Mills, Pa./Rustin) combined for nine points during the first three minutes of the second period as Brandywine climbed within two. D'Andre Davis answered Brandywine's run with a basket for York and York maintained a lead between four and six points over the next six minutes.

York pushed the margin to double figures for the first time when Deriq Brown, who scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the second half, knocked down consecutive jumpers near the midway point of the stanza.

A quick Brandywine spurt that featured a jumper from Barrouk and triples from Gatewood and Jordan Graves (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) during a span of 57 seconds brought the Lions within four with 2:49 to play, but Michael Coleman countered with consecutive buckets and Davis converted a three-point play to put the game away for York.

Colin Hockenbrock (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) produced 15 points, while Barrouk tallied 14 points and six rebounds. Gatewood chipped in 11 points and Graves added 10 points.

Brown was the lone double-figure scorer for York.

Brandywine (2-3, 0-1 PSUAC) is back at home Friday for a matchup with Penn State New Kensington at 8:00 PM.
