Moravian Uses Late Run To Best Brandywine

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine led by four points with 12:06 to play in the game, but Moravian used a 14-0 run to take the lead for good and defeat the Lions' men's basketball team 81-68 on Wednesday night.

Both teams started fast with Brandywine making its first four shots from the field, while Moravian knocked down five-straight to open the game. The hot shooting continued for Brandywine as Dean Kane (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) buried a three-pointer and Tim Mattern (Lincoln University, Pa./Salesianum) sank a layup to give the Lions a three-point edge at 18-15 through eight minutes.

However, Brandywine hit a cold spell, going four minutes without a basket. The Greyhounds took advantage, scoring eight consecutive points, to build a 28-22 lead. Moravian's lead reached eight points at the three-minute mark, but Mattern's two layups during the final 46 seconds of the half, including one just before the buzzer sounded, brought Brandywine within 36-31 at the break.

Brandywine wasted no time taking the lead early in the second period as the Lions scored nine of the first 11 points, capped by a three-point play from Jordan Graves (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) to jump on top 40-38.

Four minutes later, Bryce Barrouk (Glen Mills, Pa./Rustin) knocked down three free throws and Kane followed with a basket during the Lions' next possession as Brandywine opened up a 53-49 lead; however, the Greyhounds connected on four triples during a 14-0 run that put the visitors on top by double figures.

Brandywine answered with the next seven points as Jamar Wright (Wilmington, Del./Conrad School of Science) and Johnta Dunson (Philadelphia, Pa./Freire Charter) made layups and Barrouk buried a three-pointer to make the spread 63-60.

Moravian once again had an answer, netting seven-straight points of his own, that swelled the margin back to 10 points and the Greyhounds would lead by double figures the rest of the way.

Barrouk led all scorers as he poured in 26 points on 8-of-13 shooting and knocked down three triples. Colin Hockenbrock (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) added 10 points, while Kane tallied six points and five boards. Vince Zulli (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.

Moravian shot 53 percent from the field, buried 10 three-point shots and held a 40-31 edge on the boards. C.J. Weber led three double-figure scorers with 16 points.

Brandywine (2-9, 0-5 PSUAC) hosts Penn State DuBois Friday night at 8:00 PM.
