Brandywine Bests DuBois For First PSUAC Victory

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine built a 31-point second-half lead and held off a late rally from Penn State DuBois to earn its first Penn State University Athletic Conference victory of the season by a 77-63 score on Friday night.

Brandywine stormed out to a 20-3 lead through nine minutes behind the three-point shooting of Jordan Graves (Media, Pa./Strath Haven), who buried a trio of triples.

Dean Kane's (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) three-pointer gave the Lions their largest lead of the opening half at 30-11 with 7:19 to go.

In all, Brandywine drained six three-pointers during the opening 20 minutes and brought a 41-25 edge into intermission.

Leading by 18 points with 15:18 to play, Brandywine embarked on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes as its lead swelled to 30 points. Johnta Dunson (Philadelphia, Pa./Freire Charter), Vince Zulli (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and Colin Hockenbrock (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) all made layups, while Devon Jones (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) capped the rally with back-to-back three-pointers. Ninety seconds later, Kane's basket gave Brandywine its largest lead of the night at 61-30.

DuBois made the game interesting late, using a 22-4 surge to get within 13 with less than six minutes to play. The visitors closed the gap to 71-60, but Bryce Barrouk's (Glen Mills, Pa./Rustin) three-point play extended the margin back to 14 and Brandywine limited DuBois to just three points the rest of the way.

Barrouk produced his fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Hockenbrock paced the Lions' scoring effort with 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting.

Dunson added 12 points and five assists and Graves coupled 10 points with five helpers. Jones and Kane each contributed eight points, while Zulli tacked on seven points and seven rebounds.

Brandywine shot 44 percent from the field, knocked down eight three-pointers and held a 43-34 edge on the boards. The Lions produced assists on 20 of their 27 made field goals.

Brandywine (3-9, 1-5 PSUAC) plays its final home game of 2021 Saturday against Penn State Greater Allegheny at 2:00 PM.
