Neumann Topples Brandywine In First Game Of 2022

ASTON, Pa. -- Neumann University broke open a tight game with a late 17-8 run as the Penn State Brandywine men's basketball team suffered a loss during its first game of the new calendar year, falling 90-67 on Monday night.

Four Brandywine starters netted double-figure scoring paced by Bryce Barrouk's (Glen Mills, Pa./Rustin) 15 points. Barrouk added seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks, while Dillon Jones (Wilmington, Del./Hodgson Vo Tech) collected a career-high 13 points, along with five rebounds and two blocked shots. Johnta Dunson (Philadelphia, Pa./Freire Charter) posted 14 points and Colin Hockenbrock (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) notched 10 points.

Barrouk's jumper at the 10:23 mark of the first half gave Brandywine at 23-22 lead, but Jalen Vaughns and KJ Speller answered with back-to-back buckets for the Knights as Neumann retook the lead. The Knights' edge grew as large as 13 points before Jones' third triple of the opening half brought the Lions within 49-39 at the break.

Brandywine faced a 12-point deficit 90 seconds into the second period before a Barrouk three-pointer and four free throws from Hockenbrock in a span of 1:30 helped the Lions climb within seven at 55-48; however, the Knights collected the four-straight points and 17 of the next 25 as they extended the margin to 16 points by the midway mark of the half.

With 7:59 to play in regulation, Barrouk sank three free throws to slice the deficit to 12, but Vaughns and TJ Lewis combined for 10 consecutive points and Neumann pulled away during the final minutes of the second half.

Brandywine shot 45 percent from the field, but allowed 52 percent shooting by Neumann. The Knights made 19 free throws, compared to just seven by Brandywine, while also holding a 44-28 edge on the boards. Vaughns produced 30 points and 16 rebounds to lead Neumann.

Brandywine (4-11, 2-5 PSUAC) plays on its home court for the first time in nearly one month Thursday when the Lions host Washington Adventist at 7:00 PM.
