Brandywine Sits 15th Following Opening Round Of Championships

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine golf team is 15th following the opening round of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship at Penn State's Blue Course. The Lions are also sixth in the Penn State University Athletic Conference Championship standings. The league runs its conference championship concurrently with the national championship.

Brandywine recorded a team total of 358 strokes to place 15th in the 19-team national field and sixth among eight conference opponents.

Topping Brandywine's seven golfers competing was Alex Barone (Glenolden, Pa./Concord), who shot 87. Barone's round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-four 10th hole and six pars as he sits tied for 58th in the 111-player field.

Matt Cavanaugh (Upper Darby, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) is just behind Barone after carding an opening-round 88. He recorded four pars and a birdie on the 13th.

Zak Karlton (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) totaled 90 strokes, while Ty Coccia (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) rounded out Brandywine's top four with a round of 93.

Nathan Sauder (Pittsgrove, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) tallied a round of 94. Marge Reynolds (West Chester, Pa./Westtown School) registered an opening-round 96, while Payten Bussmann (Glen Eagle, Minn./Sauk Centre) finished the round in 97 strokes.

Johnson & Wales-Charlotte leads the USCAA team standings with 301 strokes, while Penn State Hazleton is the top PSUAC team (321).

The second and final round of both championships begins at 9:00 AM Tuesday in State College.
