Berkeley Edges Brandywine 2-0 At USCAA Championship

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Top-seeded Berkeley College used a pair of second-half goals to defeat defending United States Collegiate Athletic Association champion Penn State Brandywine, topping the fourth-seeded Lions 2-0 on Saturday night.

Brandywine, which failed to score a goal for just the third time in 23 matches this fall, had its opportunities, putting five shots on net and collecting 10 shots overall.

Both teams were stout on defense through the opening 45 minutes as the match reached halftime scoreless. Lions' net minder Juan Guerrero (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) made three stops during the opening half to preserve the clean sheet.

The Lions put four shots on target during the second half, but it was Berkeley that struck for the go-ahead goal off the foot of Amadou Sy during the 63rd minute. Sy headed in his second goal of the game, adding an insurance tally for the Knights exactly 12 minutes later.

Brandywine continued to pressure, but a shot by Dom Scrivano (Essington, Pa./Interboro) sailed just wide and Gavin Birch (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) was stopped on the door step by Knights' keeper Dario Cruz-Sepulveda.

Guerrero stopped six shots overall for the Lions, while Cruz-Sepulveda made five stops. Alex Lopez (Toughkenamon, Pa./Kennett) provided two of Brandywine's shots on goal.

Brandywine (16-6-1) will face No. 5 Southern Maine CC Sunday at 2:15 pm in its second match of the USCAA Tournament.
