Brandywine Rallies For Split In Season Opener

ASTON, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine dropped its 2021 softball season opener 11-1 to Penn State DuBois, but rallied to blank the visitors 8-0 in game two behind a complete-game shutout from Rebecca Sorrentino (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) to earn a split of the Friday afternoon doubleheader.

Game One: Penn State DuBois 11, Penn State Brandywine 1

DuBois, playing its ninth game already this spring, took advantage of five Brandywine errors in the Lions' first game in over 12 months, scoring 11 times in five innings to end the game by run rule.

Brandywine collected four hits, including a run-scoring single from Sarah Moore (New Holland, Pa./Pequea Valley) that drove in Haley Grossi (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) in the fourth inning for the Lions' only score.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 8, Penn State DuBois 0

Sorrentino took a perfect game into the fifth inning of game two before settling for a two-hit shutout to lead Brandywine to an 8-0, six-inning triumph in the nightcap.

Only one ball left the infield during the first four frames against Sorrentino before a leadoff single to start the fifth inning broke up the no-hit bid. Sorrentino fanned four and issued just one walk to earn her first victory.

Brandywine got its offense started in the first inning when Moore singled with one out and scored via wild pitch.

The Lions added on with four runs on four hits one frame later as Grossi, Moore and Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) recorded consecutive run-scoring singles. Ferry later crossed home thanks to a DuBois error to up the lead to 5-0.

Sorrentino scored on a wild pitch, while Jacie Sparacino (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) singled and scored on a groundout in the fifth. Rachel Cherubini's (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) run via wild pitch one frame later ended the game after six innings.

Moore paced the Lions' offense with three hits in four at-bats, while Cherubini stole two bases.

Brandywine and DuBois close out the weekend series on Saturday at DuBois beginning at 1:00 pm.
