Brandywine, DuBois Split Doubleheader For Second-Straight Day

DUBOIS, Pa. – For a second consecutive day, Penn State Brandywine and Penn State DuBois played to a softball doubleheader split Saturday afternoon. Brandywine blanked DuBois 2-0 in the opener before DuBois claimed game two by a 7-6 count.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 2, Penn State DuBois 0

Rebecca Halford (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) went the distance to earn her first collegiate victory, a shutout, in game one. She struck out three and scattered six hits over 7.0 innings of work.

After cruising through the first three innings, Halford worked out of a jam in the fourth to preserve Brandywine's one-run lead. Two DuBois baserunners were in scoring position with one out, but a strikeout and groundout ended the threat.

DuBois threatened once more in the sixth, placing a runner on third, before Halford set down the final two batters of the inning.

Brandywine's offense made the most of its four hits, scoring single runs in the fourth and seventh innings. Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) walked with two outs and came around to score on Rebecca Sorrentino's (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) long double off the center field wall to get Brandywine into the scoring column. The Lions tacked on an insurance run in the seventh as Haley Grossi (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) doubled down the left field line and came around to score on Destiny Brophy's (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) base hit.

Game Two: Penn State DuBois 7, Penn State Brandywine 6

Brandywine rallied from four runs down to tie the score at 6-6, but a pair of seventh inning errors allowed DuBois to walk off with the one-run victory.

The Lions plated the game's first run in the third inning when Lianna Dedios (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial) led off with a base hit and later scored on Rachel Cherubini's (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) infield single.

DuBois struck for five runs during the bottom of the third, but Brandywine got one run back in the fourth as Brophy and Dedios started the inning with back-to-back singles and Brophy crossed home via Alexia Galli's (Glenolden, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) groundout.

DuBois added another run in the fifth before Brandywine rallied by pushing across four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Cherubini got the rally started with a double and crossed home on Sorrentino's two-base hit. Three batters later, Dedios singled in a run and Galli followed with an RBI single. An error allowed Dedios to reach home with the game-tying run.

However, DuBois claimed the victory as a pair of miscues in the field allowed the game-winning run to score in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Brandywine (2-2) is back at home Tuesday to host Penn State Schuylkill at 3:00 pm.
