Brandywine Downs DuBois For Road Sweep

DUBOIS, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine softball team picked up a pair of pivotal Penn State University Athletic Conference victories at Penn State DuBois on Tuesday afternoon by scores of 9-5 and 7-0. With the victories, Brandywine claimed the six-game season series by a 4-2 margin.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 9, Penn State DuBois 2

Brandywine jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning as Rachel Cherubini (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) led off the game with a walk and scored on Destiny Brophy's (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) sacrifice fly. Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) followed with a line drive single to left, allowing Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) to score.

The score remained the same until the sixth inning when the Lions piled on four more runs. Jacie Sparacino (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) launched a run-scoring double, while Haley Grossi (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) crossed home following a DuBois error. Sparacino later scored on a wild pitch and Ferry upped the lead to 6-0 with a two-out, RBI single.

DuBois got one run back during the bottom of the sixth, but Brandywine put the game away by tacking on three insurance runs in the seventh. Three walks loaded the bases with two outs for Sarah Moore (New Holland, Pa./Pequea Valley), who worked a base on balls, forcing in Brandywine's seventh run. Cherubini added a two-run single through the middle to cap the scoring.

Landis went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Sparacino and Lianna DeDios (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial) both scored twice and Ferry stole two bases.

Rebecca Sorrentino (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) went the distance in the circle to earn her second victory of the season for the Lions. She struck out five and yielded five earned runs.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 7, Penn State DuBois 0

Brandywine completed the sweep behind the pitching of Rebecca Halford (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) in game two. Halford fired her second complete-game shutout of the spring against DuBois, claiming her second win, after striking out four and surrendering just four hits.

The Lions once again got the offense going early as Landis recorded a ground-rule double to plate Cherubini and Brophy crossed home following an error to make the count 2-0 after one inning. Cherubini came around to score Brandywine's third run one frame later after Ferry crushed a double off the left field fence.

Grossi added a fourth-inning RBI single, while Sorrentino provided the big blow for the Lions in the fifth with a two-out, bases-clearing double that provided the final margin.

Brophy produced three hits, Sorrentino added two knocks and Cherubini scored three runs to pace the Brandywine offense.

Brandywine (4-4, 4-4 PSUAC) opens a six-game series with Penn State Schuylkill Wednesday afternoon at Maple Zone (3:00 pm).
