Moore Fires No-Hitter; Brandywine Rolls Past Scranton

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine eased to a Penn State University Athletic Conference softball sweep of Penn State Scranton, highlighted by Sarah Moore's (New Holland, Pa./Pequea Valley) no-hitter in game two, on Monday afternoon. Brandywine claimed the victories by scores of 16-0 (3 innings) and 15-0 (4 innings).

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 16, Penn State Scranton 0 (3 innings)

Brandywine collected 13 hits and took advantage of seven walks issued by Scranton to end game one by run rule after three innings. The Lions led 2-0 after one frame, added 10 more scores in the second and finished the game with a four-run third inning.

Rachel Cherubini (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) reached base in all four of her plate appearances with three hits and a walk. She drove in four runs, scored three times and stole two bases, while Farrell Everett (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and Destiny Brophy (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) added two hits and four RBI.

In all, eight players tallied at least one hit and eight crossed home at least once for the Lions.

Rebecca Halford (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) twirled her fifth shutout of the spring in the circle. She struck out six and yielded just one hit over 3.0 innings to up her record to 5-4.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 15, Penn State Scranton 0 (4 innings)

Moore's no-hitter is the ninth in Brandywine history and first since Grace DeRosa fired a no-hitter against SUNY Canton at the USCAA World Series on May 15, 2017.

Moore retired the first eight batters she faced before a walk broke up her bid for a perfect game. In all she allowed just three Scranton batters to reach base, while striking out five during her first appearance in the circle this spring.

Cherubini, Everett and Lianna DeDios (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial) all produced two hits for the Lions. Cherubini also scored three runs, knocked in two and stole a pair of bases, while Brophy collected four more RBI.

DeDios and Everett both scored two runs and Rebecca Sorrentino (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) added two RBI. Moore helped her own cause with a two-RBI double during an eight-run third inning.

Brandywine (11-5, 11-5 PSUAC) faces Scranton again on Tuesday, this time in Dunmore, beginning at 2:00 pm.
