Brandywine Picks Up Senior Day Sweep Of Hazleton

ASTON, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine softball team celebrated Senior Day with two victories over Penn State Hazleton on Friday afternoon as the Lions won by scores of 5-1 and 9-0.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 5, Penn State Hazleton 1

Brandywine scored twice in the first inning and added three more scores two frames later to claim the opener.

The Lions' first three batters reached base in the first inning as Rachel Cherubini (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) walked and moved to second on Meghan Ferry's (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City). Cherubini came around to score on Destiny Brophy's (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) base hit, while Ferry stole home to up the margin to 2-0.

Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) launched her second home run of the year, a two-run shot, to double the lead in the third inning. Brandywine added one more score when Farrell Everett (Wynnewood, Pa./Haverford) singled through the middle, scoring Haley Grossi (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick).

Grossi and Rebecca Sorrentino (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) both collected two hits to pace the Brandywine offense. Sorrentino also went the distance in the circle as she improved her spring mark to 7-1. She struck out three and allowed one run over 7.0 innings of work.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 9, Penn State Hazleton 0 (Five innings)

Brandywine piled up six first inning runs and cruised to victory in the nightcap.

An RBI single from Brophy once again started the scoring, while Grossi and Lianna DeDios (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial) provided back-to-back run-scoring singles. Everett smashed a double off the center field fence to score DeDios and Grossi as the lead swelled to 6-0.

Everett added a two-run single in the third to give her a four-RBI game and scored Brandywine's ninth run following a Hazleton throwing error.

Everett, DeDios and Brophy all collected two hits and the Brandywine offense totaled nine knocks overall.

Rebecca Halford (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) pitched all five innings to earn her seventh victory. All seven of Halford's victories this spring have been shutouts. She struck out three and scattered eight hits.

Brandywine (15-5, 15-5 PSUAC) and Hazleton close out the season series Saturday afternoon at Freedom Park in Drums, Pa., beginning at noon.
