Brandywine Edged By Benedictine; Lions Rout Northland

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Penn State Brandywine softball team dropped its first game of the day to Benedictine 2-1, but bounced back to roll Northland 14-0 in the nightcap to earn a split of the day on Tuesday evening.

Game One: Benedictine 2, Penn State Brandywine 1

Benedictine scored a pair of two-out runs, including one in the bottom of the sixth inning to go in front as the Lions were edged 2-1 to begin the day.

The Eagles pieced together three singles to take a 1-0 lead through one frame.

The scored remained the same until the top of the fifth inning when Sarah Moore (New Holland, Pa./Pequea Valley) laced a one-out double to center field and later came around to score the game-tying run.

Benedictine retook the lead following Victoria Duszynski's third hit of the afternoon, a double to right-center field, in the sixth.

Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) went the distance in the circle for the Lions. She struck out three and allowed two runs on six hits. Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) paced the Brandywine offense with two hits and a stolen base.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 14, Northland 0

Brandywine scored five first-inning runs and a pair of Lion pitchers limited Northland to just two hits as Brandywine captured a 14-0, five-inning victory to close out the day.

Bussenger and Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) both recorded three hits, while Emily Reagan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) tallied two hits and drove in four runs. Mushinski added three RBI and Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) crossed home three times, while Bussenger swiped four more bags.

April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) yielded just a pair of singles and struck out five during four innings in the circle to improve to 2-1. Jackie Capers (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) fanned two of the three batters she faced during the fifth inning in her college debut.

Reagan drove in two runs with a triple and Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) and Moore recorded run-scoring singles during the opening frame.

Mushinski tacked on a RBI single in the second, while Anna Caporale (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) pushed Ferry across the plate with a groundout.

Caporale and Reagan recorded consecutive RBI doubles in the fourth and Mushinski capped the scoring by plating Bussenger with a double in the fourth.

Brandywine (3-3) wraps up its Spring Break trip Wednesday against Elms (11:15 AM) and Emmanuel (1:30 PM).
