Brandywine Drops A Pair At Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Swarthmore College on Thursday. The Lions were defeated 7-1 in the opener and edged 4-3 in six innings during the nightcap.

Game One: Swarthmore 7, Penn State Brandywine 1

Swarthmore claimed the opener by a count of 7-1.

The Garnet scored a first-inning run and padded their lead with three more scored in the third. Swarthmore added a trio of insurance runs during the final three frames.

Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) provided all of the run scoring for the Lions by leading off the fourth inning with her first home run of the season. In addition to Rees' long ball, Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) recorded a trio of singles and stole two bases, while Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) provided a seventh-inning base hit.

Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) went the distance in the circle and set a season high with six strikeouts, but took the loss.

Game Two: Swarthmore 4, Penn State Brandywine 3

The Garnet clipped the Lions, winning the nightcap by one run to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Brandywine got its offense going early, recording three-straight singles to open the game. Bussenger led off with a base hit and Ferry followed with a single. Kaylee Mushinski's (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) single scored Bussenger and two batters later, Rees plated Ferry with a ground out for a 2-0 Brandywine lead.

Swarthmore evened the score with single runs during the second and third innings before striking for a pair of two-out runs in the fourth to claim a 4-2 edge.

Mushinski singled and came around to score two batters later via Rees' base hit as Brandywine cut the deficit in half in the sixth. The Lions pushed for more with two runners in scoring position, but a groundout and a strikeout ended the threat. The game was called for darkness after six complete innings.

April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) saw her record drop to 4-2 after allowing four runs and striking out two in 3.2 innings in the circle. Maddie DeFazio (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Rees and Mushinski both produced two hits. Rees also drove in two runs, while Mushinski collected one RBI and one run scored.

Brandywine (7-5) opens PSUAC play Friday at Maple Zone against Penn State Scranton at 3:00 PM.
