Brandywine Produces Road Sweep; Rees Records 100th Hit

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine racked up 28 hits, including the 100th hit in Karly Rees' (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) career, during a softball doubleheader sweep at Penn State Hazleton as the Lions claimed victories by scores of 8-1 and 9-0 Sunday afternoon.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 8, Penn State Hazleton 1

Seven players tallied at least two hits, led by a three-hit effort from Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury), and Brandywine rolled to an 8-1 triumph in the opener.

Cassario also drove in a run and tossed a complete game in the circle. She tallied a season-high nine strikeouts and allowed one run on eight hits over seven innings.

Rees pushed her career hit total to 99 with a pair of knocks, while Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) had two hits, three RBI and two runs scored. Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) added two hits, two runs and a stolen base and Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) collected two hits and a pair of RBI. Jess James (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) also registered two-hit games.

Bussenger singled, stole second and scored on a Mushinski sacrifice fly to start the scoring in the first.

Ferry got a four-run rally going in the third as she homered for the second-straight game, sending a two-run shot over the fence. Two batters later, Landis pushed Mushinski across the plate with a single and Cassario capped the frame with an RBI single.

Emily Reagan (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) added a sacrifice fly in the fifth before Ferry tripled in James and scored on Mushinski's groundout to close out the scoring in the sixth inning.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 9, Penn State Hazleton 0

Rees became the 11th player in Brandywine softball history to amass 100 hits as the Lions completed the sweep by winning 9-0 in game two.

Rees legged out an infield single to shortstop in the fifth inning to reach 100 hits in her 91st career game. She added a run-scoring double one frame later for her second two-hit game of the day.

Landis tallied RBI singles during the first, third and fifth innings to help Brandywine open up a 6-0 edge through five innings. In addition to Rees' RBI double in the sixth, Mushinski lifted a sacrifice fly to center field and Rees scored via Hazleton error during the three-run frame.

Landis paced the offense with three hits, while Rees and Bussenger both collected two knocks. Bussenger swiped three bases and scored twice, while Mushinski drove in two runs and crossed home twice.

April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) twirled a two-hit shutout to up her record to 5-2 this spring. She fanned five Hazleton hitters in six innings in the circle.

Brandywine (11-5, 4-0 PSUAC) continues conference play at home Thursday when the Lions host Penn State Mont Alto at 3:00 PM.
